The Nerv Rating System
Each game I review at nerv Game Lair is rated using a ten-point system, ten being the best and one being the worst. The final score for the game is automatically determined based on the reviewer's integer ratings in the following five independent categories:
Graphics
This category encompasses both the technical and the aesthetic quality of the game's appearance and presentation. Sexy babes in the game may help the score. But one of the main things that I look for is realism in the charaters and that of the evironment.
Sound
This category encompasses both the quality of and the usage of sound effects and music in the game. Music is an important facot for it most of the time can make up the mood of the game. Example: Residents Evil
Gameplay
This category encompasses everything from a game's interface, to its control, to its play balance, all to suggest how enjoyable the game is to play.
Value
This category refers to a game's longevity and accounts for any additional features and options for customization in the game, as well as for the game's price point. Games with poor gameplay tend to have inherently low value scores. However, a game may be enjoyable, but otherwise very short.
Reviewer's Tilt
This category lets the reviewer sway the final score one way or the other to account for any disjunction between the four preceding categories. The reviewer's tilt is suggestive of the reviewer's overall experience with the game. For instance, a game that has good graphics but poor gameplay might have a low tilt. Meanwhile, a game that doesn't look or sound good or control well but that has a great story might have a high tilt.
The five categories are weighted differently in the final score; gameplay and reviewer's tilt are weighted more heavily than the other scores. The following is a breakdown of the entire range of final scores:
10.0 ... "Perfect"
This score refers to a game that cannot be improved upon in any way at all.
9.0 - 9.9 ... "Superb"
A game within this range is absolutely recommended. Games that score in this range are highly uncommon.
8.0 - 8.9 ... "Great"
A game within this range is excellent in most every way, and its few setbacks are negligible. Games that score in the upper half of this range are fully recommended by GameSpot and are good enough to provide an enjoyable experience both to fans of the game's particular genre and to new players alike.
7.0 - 7.9 ... "Good"
A game within this range is very good and worth playing for fans of its particular genre. While its strengths outweigh its weaknesses, a game that falls in this range tends to have noticeable faults.
6.0 - 6.9 ... "Fair"
A game within this range has certain good qualities but significant problems as well.
5.0 - 5.9 ... "Mediocre"
A game within this range is merely average, and it has enough weaknesses to thoroughly dampen its strengths. There probably exists a much better game of its kind.
4.0 - 4.9 ... "Poor"
A game within this range lacks the cohesion, direction, or quality that would otherwise make it enjoyable.
3.0 - 3.9 ... "Bad"
A game within this range has scarce few merits, and any of its positive qualities most likely serve only to exacerbate its many problems.
2.0 - 2.9 ... "Terrible"
A game within this range is almost entirely devoid of any effective or fully functionally features.
1.0 - 1.9 ... "Abysmal"
The rare game that falls in this range has no redeeming qualities at all.
The NERV reviewer considers the game being reviewed at that precise moment in time, in order to account for constantly changing standards. For example, if a game receives a graphics score of 9, and its sequel released one year later looks nearly identical, the sequel might receive a lower graphics score than the original to reflect the aging technology.
